my nice pink fixed gear winter/commuting steel frame could do with a tart up.

The paint is chipped around the BB and i have just broken the fork and preplaced it with an old 531 mismached pair that need repainted anyway. I want to get it done so that rust doesn't take hold.

I was thinking about going to a gios blue

Does anyone have suggestions for painting options? any recommendations and approx costs? can i get a reasonable finish with a spraycan or get it done pro? What prep do i need to do before i get it resprayed? Will I need to strip it before sending it or would it get shotblasted at the painter?

Thanks

Gerry

Nitromors and lots of steel wool and elbow grease then prime it and spray it.

Will take ages and cost you probably 30 or 40 quid in materials easily.

ALternatively you can get it powdercoated for around 40 or 50 quid - there is a guy in Falkirk that does it - i'm sure there will be places closer to you that would do it for a similar charge.

I'm lazy so i'd pick the powdercoat option - plus it will be a nicer finish I reckon than spray

not so long back Dolan did a single colour paint job inc p&p for £100.

Mic Cowall also does similar with decals of choice.

there is a powder coater in hillington i believe.

or do it yourself for that authentic "painted with a sausage look"

I got a recommendation for powdercoating at these chaps, Chameleon in Renfrew.

http://www.chameleonmetalcoatings.co.uk/about-chameleon

i think cost is arounf £40 for a dip, shotblast and single colour powdercoat. I'll pay them a visit and have a look at what they can do. The red (as per the painted chassis in the galery or the red engine components), or the blue as on the strut brace in one of their pictures look quite nice.

I'll provide an update on this once ive spoken to them & post a before & after picture once done

just get it powder coated locally, a much tougher and more durable finish?

If it's pink,it already sounds like a tart,But,it's a Winter bike,for gooness sake!
Do what Grantus said---do it yourself---you and your tart will bond forever.
(It used to be a competition, back when,to see who could produce the most gallus/gringo winter bike, and,no,I never won it!)

(I never won anything,boo-hoo---see what you started!)

Ian, I'm sure you once won an award for being worst at everything - if you didn't then you should have done!!
P.S. I won it the year before.

I've had three framesets powdercoated by chameleon in renfrew. Expect to pay up to £50 for a strip and paint. You'll need to take all the components off yourself and, although they protect the threads, you should expect to have to run a tap through the threads.

Ah well, it looks like my plans are for nowt... The BB appeard to have corroded to the frame good and solid and it isn't for budging and needs replaced.

Any suggestions? It is so sight the LBS stripped the teeth off the tool they were using. One for the bin? I could get it sent to Argos of Bobjackson, but it is probably getting to the beyond economical repair stage if it resorts to that.

Had the frame stripped and ready apart from that... Chameleon were dearer than i thought - I think they wanted either £40 or £50 for the frame and £30 for the fork. I'm not sure if they would have done a deal for the pair together, but the owner wasn't there when i went on Sat to scope the place out so i couldn't ask. The blue and red were their best colours by far.

i called a crowd P & J Powder Coating 17, Evanton Place, Thornliebank, Glasgow, G46 8JE, who qioted £35 for the Frame & fork strip & paint, but i've not bothered going to see them and the colours on offer since the BB problem has reared its head.

P&J do a great job - well recommended. Depending on the type of BB you use, a local engineering yard might be your best bet. They can heat the frame up and try and get BB out this way - same with seatpins etc.

Thanks Chris... I'm going to look into that. Its a steel frame with a steel square taper BB with a traditional style fitting that takes a Park tools BBT-3, rather than a splined BB shell, so there is some hope that if it is blow torched and put in a vice, it might shift. ihis is ok as i was going to repaint it anyway. I need to get the frame back from the LBS to see what damage (if any) their attempt to remove the BB has caused to decide what to do next.

if that fails.... then a new winter / commuting bike beckons.

Is it the cup side or the whole BB side that you cannot remove? If the cup side, can you cut from inside with a hacksaw? Can you get WD40 into it from the other side through the BB shell?

I think it is the whole BB...but i'll find out tonight when i see the frame again. I've a friend who work in Babcocks who might me able to do something.

Also got a friend who works in a engineering firm who might be able to machine it out.

Well i got the BB out (eventually!) so the bike is off for a powdercoat.
I went to P&J, but to be honest i thought their colours were not that great...they do a metal flake version, but it looks like quite a coarse flake and i'm mot so sure it looked great. so i didn't use them.

I went back to Chameleon & confirmed teh price... as i thought, i was misquoted and it is £50... the price of £30 for forks was for motorbike forks.

They do a really nice candy red and candy blye with metal flakes...
and the finish looked much better on their samples.

Photos to follow.

Just buy a second hand job its got to be cheaper than all of the above and you might actually get a lot of good kit hanging on it as well.

Its going to cost me about £100 to have it completely refurbed (inc BB, new cables, rolls saddle, other parts and the respray) so it is not bad value....plus it keeps an old track frame / fixed gear in circulation....

I think it is the original village bike.... everyone seems to have had a go of her at some point... i know of at least 4 previous owners before me, inc. black boab...

Had my steel frame powdercoated last winter by ESP, frame only was £40. Think it was a tenner for the fork.

I ended up getting it painted at Chameleon in Renfrew. It cost £50 and I'm very pleased with the result. P&J colours looked dull
