Race Report
This is my first attempt at a race report,so don't expect the flowery prose of a Graeme
Small or the witty, cutting observations of a Tam O'Ranter!I'll just tell it as it was,in
a dull, factual style. The riders were greeted with glorious sunshine at the Crieff
leisure centre. Jimmy Rae arrived ,still in his pyjamas,to commence the signing-on,ably
assisted by his good lady Alicia with the cakes. Rider numbers were down a wee bit due to
other events, but at around 40 enough for a good race. Complete no-show from the Kooriers
and the EEKS, none of whom can manage two events in one weekend apparently. A huge
turnout from the Fawkirk boded well for a good result, but oh how I was disappointed!
The riders were split into two groups, the first for those who admitted to being rubbish,
and the second for those who wouldn't admit to being rubbish!, with a 10 minute gap
between them. After a lengthy delay while Jimmy changed a novices wheel, off they went.
The first group which included some classy auld yins and Big McQ of the Fawkirk got stuck
right in and forged a ferocious pace over the first lap. There was some mis-placed
comments about Big McQ's presence in the first group , but bear in mind he is a 4th cat
Vet with limited experience, and only started racing in 1986. Such was their pace that
after 20 miles of racing the 2nd group had only made up 2 minutes. The seeds of the second
groups demise was sown on the first ascent of the Comrie Moor when the strongest man in
the race,Robin Wilkins, forged such a pace that he reduced the 2nd group from 18 to
7 ,leaving many good riders, including most of the Fawkirk scattered over the hillside. He
would regret this later! At the start of the second lap when they realised there was some
work to be done, Robin, with John Kermode and Barry Wilson put the hammer down. Over the
moor it was down to just those three chasing, but with so few to contribute it looked an
impossible task. Sure enough when they reached Jimmies final torture test, the 1-mile
finishing ascent of Torlum Hill five of the first group were still clear.Big John romped
up the hill for the win,as be-fits his relative youth. Wilkins and Kermode managed to get
within a couple of minutes at the end. Robin will have learned that it's all very well
being the strongest man in the race, but to make up 10 minutes in an APR, you need
strength in numbers! All in all though a great day out! Thanks once again to Jimmy and
his helpers. Cheers Ian.

Ian, good write up, but I'm sorry I can't accept that we failed to catch the first group because I rode too hard up Comrie Moor on the first lap. Without wanting to start an arguement the problem was that the scratch group didn't have a big enough performance advantage to close the gap over the course of the race. Several of the scratch riders were racing the Dave Bell the previous day, and others were unwilling or able to contribute.
At the end of the 1st lap (infact half way up the moor on the second lap) there was still a decent group of 7 scratch riders chasing, and we were still 8 mins down on the leaders! Talking to John at the finish he pointed out that we'd averaged over 24mph on what is a hilly circuit.
I think you've failed to give proper credit to a good ride by the lead group who rode well and held off a rapid scratch group for a well deserved result. The guys that beat us might be getting on, but they're not slow. Well done to them. Good ride. Especially Alan Hay
