I found a collaborative google map that aims to chart cobbled roads in the UK and beyond. There's nothing mapped in Scotland yet, apart from Culross, which I just added. If anyone has a google login, do you fancy adding to this?

Actually, though my dad did pass away back in 1995, Pete Whitehead just passed this last summer. It's true that Joe and Charlie still ride together several days a week, and at 83, Joe(1955 Scottish Champion)shows little signs of slowing.
My uncle (still living in Paisley) mentioned the Kinning Park Clarion club to me and when i Googled it, I ended up here. Nice to see my dad remembered some 47 years after leaving Scotland.

Great stuff, great stuff everyone. I'm going to put a as many of these as I can on the google map so anyone thinking of devising a route can use it as a resource. |

I seem to remember,the Ivy Road Race,roon the Cree etc. was around 113 Miles,could be wrong.Peter Whitehead was a regular,then moved to LA...in the USA,along with Joe Mead.I raced against them back in 1980,down at Huntington Beach CA and up in Solvang.I just heard that Peter passed on a few years ago as did Bill McGregor of the Kinning Park Clarion.Joe Mead is 83 now and still rides a bit along with Charlie McTaggart,down in Pasedena...Cheers...Gus.

the legendary windmill brae in aberdeen has to be on any tour of scottish cobbles - 1:4 gradient, strippers, scrappin' bleezers and kebab munchers make it the closest we'll get to the Kwaremont.
You ain't a real cyclist unless you've tackled this on yer fixed with nae lights at 1am on the way home from the boozer!

Urban CX??? How good would that be, take CX out of the muddy circuits and through the cities like the "Rat Run" races, using concrete, steps, ramps, parks.
Place to place CX or a 3 Peaks of the North.....sounds v. interesting?

Jimmy was the Ivy over The Ogle and The Cree not the longest at a 128,could be wrong but I thought the Champs were 120 or there abouts.
According to the wife I am often wrong!

'Finish was on Riverside Drive a great finish, Ernie Scally beat me in the sprint and Kenny Laidlaw was third' I think the Champs event was held over 140 miles then, |

I can remember coming off on cobbles in wet drizzle on New Years Eve late afternoon on the Crow road near Anniesland.
A tram car had stopped and boarding passengers were lined up from the pavement to the platform of the car so I went round the outside, lost the bike on the wet cobbles and then had to sit in the middle of the road watching a motor car sliding towards me sideways and thinking "your dead china". It stopped inches away from me with driver asking if I "had no started bringing the New Year in too early!!!"
Wet cobbles were lethal.

Seem to remember the run in to the finish of the Scottish RR Champs around 1958 in Dundee was over cobbles.

its not that hard - even i can get up it (on a mtn bike). the 4 stairs at the top are a bit of a challenge, although Tam G's brother ally used to jump up them on his 'crosser. Would make a good urban CX tho.

Hmm, we've often discussed trying to get some sort of event up there, could be a good wee circuit, with the descent off the back and round again. When we used to finish our chaingang up there it was always the choice between the cobbles or riding in the narrow flat gutter trying not to bash your pedals on the curb, and then trying not to spew in front of the tourists in the castle car park....... |

The prologue of the ill fated Pru Tour in 1998 saw Boardman beating Ekimov up the cobbled climb to Stirling Castle. I have a couple of good pics somewhere taken from the Castle. |

The climb up to Culross abbey would make a spectacular, and savage, feature on a road race circuit |

The organisers of the Paisley Criterium have pencilled in this climb of Oakshaw Hill, together with passing Dooleys front door where riders can get a quick change of wheels at a bargain price...

...I rode on Cobbled Roads all of my young life in Glasgow,slip sliding to work every other morning,competing with Jay walkers,Horses and Carts,Tram cars,Buses,wee Brown Dogs of Billy Connolly fame.One of my dear friends lost his life because of them,wheel got caught,fell over and was run over by a Bus,that was on Alexandra Parade. |
